Katie Williams

Katie Williams grew up in Okemos, Michigan, and received her B.A. in English from the University of Michigan. After graduation, Katie moved to San Francisco where she worked as a community educator for San Francisco Suicide Prevention's Youth Risk Reduction Program and a coordinator for the AIDS/HIV Nightline.

In 2004, Katie was granted a Michener Fellowship at the University of Texas in Austin where she earned her M.F.A. in fiction. She returned to San Francisco and began teaching writing and literature for Academy of Art University. During this time, Katie published two young adult novels with Chronicle Books, The Space Between Trees (2010) and Absent (2013), and short stories in The Atlantic, Best American Fantasy, Prairie Schooner, Subtropics, and elsewhere.

Katie's third novel, Tell the Machine Goodnight (Riverhead 2018), imagines a near future where a technology has been invented to predict personal happiness. Tell the Machine Goodnight has been translated into ten foreign languages and listed as a New York Times editors' choice, Kirkus Best Literary Fiction of 2018, and NPR's Best Books of 2018.  

In recent years, Katie has been traveling, living in Oregon and Louisiana with her husband, Ulysses, and her hound-dog, Fia. She is at work on a new novel.
